Lara Gurney, RN
Lara Gurney is the Nurse Clinician (NC) for the Emergency Department (ED) at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). After graduating with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), she went on to complete the emergency and critical care nursing specialties certification.
She has employed her praxis between the two areas for more than 14 years. Lara’s career has led her to be skillful and focused on mentoring within the workplace, thus she pursued teaching and went on to instruct the Critical Care Specialty Program at BCIT. During this time she also worked closely with the members of the healthcare team at VGH and coordinated the Critical Care Outreach Team. Lara moved to the NC position where she has played an integral role in implementing new practice initiatives such as ECLS and REBOA and the increased use of multidisciplinary simulation to enhance teamwork and improve patient care at VGH ED. Lara recognizes the importance of patient outcomes in which she created the patient stories project (PSP): a practice initiative that highlights critical care team accomplishments through sharing patient recovery. Her professional and research interests include; addressing nursing burn out, creating healthy work environments, interdisciplinary simulation, trauma and advanced emergency practice. Currently, Lara finds herself furthering her passion for education by perusing her Masters of Nursing Science at the University of British Columbia.
