Dr. Marietjie (MJ) Slabbert
Dr Marietjie (MJ) Slabbert is a specialist in Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine and also trained in the UK in Prehospital Emergency Medicine. Her medical journey started in South Africa where she went to medical school. After completing medical school in 2001, MJ worked in Cape Town for a few years. During this time she also s got involved in prehospital and helicopter medicine. She moved to the UK in 2004 where she dual specialized in Anesthesiology and Critical Care and completed three six month fellowships in helicopter EMS in addition to her in-hospital training.
MJ moved from the UK to Canada in 2014 and completed a 18-month fellowship at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto in trauma anesthetics, trauma team leader and critical care. She’s now lives and works in Prince George, Northern BC with her Canadian husband Andrew. MJ is the Head of Department of Critical Care at the University Hospital of Northern BC and the Regional Medical Lead for the Northern Health Critical Care Program. She is a practicing anesthesiologist, trauma team leader and ICU physician and currently enrolled to complete her MBA. She remains a vocal advocate for improvement in prehospital, trauma and critical care in her region.
