Dr. Laura Duggan MD FRCPC (Pediatrics, Anesthesiology) is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia.
She is an internationally recognized educator and researcher in airway management. Having previously been a pediatric emergency physician at both the IWK in Halifax and Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, she sees many more similarities than differences across the acute care disciplines of critical care, emergency medicine and anesthesiology, especially in the field of airway management.
Along with a respiratory therapist colleague, she co-chairs the Royal Columbian Hospital Airway Committee; a unique mix of acute care disciplines seeking to better co-ordinate care with one another. By capturing data of all airway encounters throughout the hospital, we have produced a prospective treasure-trove database of interesting observational findings.
Areas of published research include decision-making and communication, successful (and unsuccessful) management strategies during ‘can’t intubate can’t oxygenate’ emergencies, the physiologic ramifications of airway management and extubation.
